I'd like to think that I would have never sat through even one day at an outdoor assembly. The miserable indoor facilities were bad enough.

I read the magazines as a child, my dub uncle sent them to my grandma. Whenever the dubs would call at our house, my mom would take the literature and be pleasant. Once, we ended up as a return visit when I was a young teen - the dubs gave me a copy of the current version of the young people ask book. I read it, every single word. WHen they came back they asked me what I thought of it, and I said that it presented some interesting ideas. My mom said I was very diplomatic and polite, but made it clear that I wasn't interested in becoming a dub. I was way too interested in boys to sign up for a religion that forbade dating.

I remember my in laws basically saying just that when we told them we were becoming dubs. We had just had our first baby, and they never got even one christmas with him. my father in law died in 2005, while we were still deep in the borg, and he never got to spend one holiday or birthday with my kids. I can't get that time back and it just kills me.

the local congregation used to set up a tent and table in front of the local Walmart. I don't know why they quit doing it, whether Wal Mart refused to continue it

I never had any complaints about splitting the bill. In our group at least, the practice was always to get separate checks. I didn't pay much attention to whether the others tipped properly, but we always did. Given the mess my kids always make, I tip extra.

I'd rather be dead than spend even a month in the exclusive company of dubs.

i would posit that it's easier to obtain the nastiest hard core porn than to obtain even a cap gun. after all, if i want a cap gun i at least have to go upstairs and retrieve the package from amazon and pay the credit card bill. I can get hard core porn in less than 10 seconds right here on my laptop without even standing up.

"material technologies and methods would make this relatively inexpensive"
Marvin, I understand your point, but I think you are underestimating just how broke and how skin flint cheap the citizens in my area are. Just at the middle school, which is right behind my house, there must be 50 ground floor windows and at least 8 entry points. Even $50,000 to install safety modifications would be hard to sell, when that school can't even afford a librarian, a nurse, or a full time guidance counselor.
Too many people, especially in small towns far away from large cities, just don't believe that something like this could happen to them. After all, there are more suicides in my county than murders ( I actually heard someone say that). People here think that because everybody knows everybody else, and everybody has lived here forever, there are no people who would commit such a terrible act. I know that isn't reality, but people desparately want to feel safe. Installing bullet proof glass would mean acknowledging that they really aren't any safer here in Carmi, IL than the people who live in Chicago or New York.
